Health Services

We aim to provide good experiences for people using public health services by making sure that these services are of high quality, appropriate, safe, available when and where needed, and coordinated to meet each individual's needs.

New South Wales public health services include more than 220 public hospitals, 500 community, family and children's health centres, 220 ambulance stations, and an extensive range of other services including mental health, dental, allied health, public health, Aboriginal health and multicultural health services.

Area Health Services

There are eight Area Health Services in NSW that have the main responsibility for health care delivery in a wide range of settings, from primary care posts in the remote outback and rural areas to metropolitan tertiary health centres.

Public Health Units

Each Area Health Service has a Public Health Unit that is responsible for surveillance and public health response in NSW, including monitoring the incidence of notifiable infectious diseases and taking appropriate action to control the spread of diseases.

Other Public Health Organisations

NSW Health also comprises a number of statewide or specialist health services:

Responsible for the delivery of front line pre-hospital care, medical retrieval and health related transport.
A statutory body charged with substantially improving cancer control in NSW.
Centre for Oral Health Strategy, NSW
Responsible for planning and developing oral health policies that focus on oral health promotion, prevention, early intervention and treatment.
A board-governed statutory health corporation established to promote and support improved clinical care, safety and quality across the NSW health system.
A statewide service that provides health services to adult and juvenile offenders in local courts, in custody and detention, and in the community. It also provides health services to adult offenders in police cells.
The Hospital provides community medical care and paediatric emergency as well as tertiary level paediatric services. The state's Liver Transplant Unit and Burns Unit, the national Poisons Information Centre and other state and national services are located here.

Other services

Adahps (AIDS Dementia & HIV Psychiatry Service)
A state-wide service that assists in the care and management of people with HIV and complex needs.
Offers overseas employment and international consultancy opportunities in commercial and development assistance projects. It also designs and manages in-house education and training programs to meet the specialised needs of international health professionals.
State-wide specialised training, consultancy and resource development for NSW Health and interagency workers who provide services to children and adults who have experienced sexual assault, domestic/family violence and/or physical and emotional abuse and neglect.
Information and services to assist health professionals to communicate with non English speaking communities throughout New South Wales.
Aims to improve the process and outcome of maternal and neonatal care in NSW, especially to those women and/or babies at risk of an adverse outcome.
